Addiction.

I have to get this off my chest.
I saw a bit of the Amy Winehouse tribute today on MTV's Music Video Awards.
I also saw a commercial for a crap documentary on Biography about young Hollywooder's that died too soon: Britney Murphy and Heath Ledger were particularly mentioned.

I was born into a family of addicts. I have been around it my entire life. Drugs. Alcohol. Gambling. You name it.
Some of the things I have seen... literally bring me to tears just remembering. I feel like I have a right to speak up when addiction is glorified. I was so confused as a kid when Kurt Cobain died and everyone went out a bought a fucking Kurt Cobain t-shirt. People that I knew ("friends") claimed to be Nirvana fans when they didn't even own the music until after he died. Now, I get it. Death is weird. It does strange things to people and I understand that. But, I wanted to throw up when people liked Cobain even more after his death - they'd never openly admit that, but it was true.
His death had the opposite effect on me. I don't think I ever listened to the music again.
Not as a "protest" really. I just wasn't interested in glorifying someone's pain. I think I also felt a little let down. But, I also knew it wasn't about ME. So, I moved on and whenever someone mentions Kurt Cobain, to this day, I cringe. (Did you like Nirvana's music? Or did you romanticize a 27 year old's drug fueled suicide?)

So, Bruno Mars sang to Amy Winehouse.
He said, "We love you, Amy."
MTV had a Warhol-wannabe picture of Amy above the band.
I had to wonder when that picture of her was taken. I also had to wonder why MTV didn't show any other photos of the singer... you know, the ones where she was fucked up out of her mind on drugs and alcohol? Why not show a picture of her dead body too? I'm serious. Because at least that would be real. THAT might wake people up.
I'm angry because when these people die EVERYONE IS MISSING THE MESSAGE.

This commercial for Britney Murphy and Heath Ledger has a voice-over speaking about their rise to fame and how it was too much. Again, I wonder. I wonder if these people would have been drug addicts without the fame. The short answer: yes.
The problem is that they didn't get help.
Many addicts won't.
Yes, it is sad that they died. It's horrible.

What is the message? Drugs and alcohol kill people. Every day. It's not romantic to die young. It's not romantic to need to get high to be creative.
It's serious. And no-one cares.
A bunch of little kids probably hung up posters in their bedrooms of Amy Winehouse (and parents allowed that, which really makes me want to vomit). And adults get on facebook and twitter and write RIP. Shut the fuck up and talk about why these people are dead.
It wasn't cancer or a car accident.

And, one more thing. I am so sick of people talking about the 27 year old curse.
People die young at every age. Stop making it something special.

Nicely put! I agree with you it is really frustrating. Glamorizing drug addiction for ratings and magazine sales is absolutely disgusting. I see addicts on the street everyday and it makes me so sad, all of them are someones son/daughter, brother/sister, mother or father and need help. Not a society that will entice them into it then shun them and leave them homeless begging on the streets. Something drastic needs to be done to save their lives but they aren't voting so nobody cares.
