"Fells Falls on 'Sunday'" - a review

Hey, everyone! I found ANOTHER review of Randy and Santina's show: Sunday in the Park With George!

YAY!

LOVE YOU ALL, Coby Kay

Fells Falls on "Sunday"

I've seen many shows... and many have been Sondheim, but of all the productions I have seen thus far, professional and community alike, I have never seen two actors (and a director) make a bigger mistake than was made in Fells Point Corner Theare's most recent production of "Sunday in the Park with George". The show started out well. Santina Maiolatesi plays Dot and sings the opening song with ease and control. The problem is one can't help but wonder why the two main characters are smoking cigars. Randall Dunkle (Georges Seurat) was impressive as he held his cigar in one hand and pencil in the other as he sketched his model girlfriend, Dot. At first I thought it was a joke. A prank. A "punk", if you will. But as the play went on Dot and Georges continued to smoke - not only smoke, but chain smoke - throughout the entire production. Even in Act 2, Granny Marie smokes like a chimney and it seems to run in the family - her grandson smokes as well. No wonder Marie is in a wheelchair and at deaths door. And she seems awfully confused - maybe she is smoking more than cigars...

More disheartening is the fact that in Act 1 the leads smoke infront of their newborn baby. I couldn't believe Kamburger was taking it this far.

The singing: GREAT. The casting: Superb. The ashes all over the stage and my clothes smelling like smoke when I got home: Disgusting.
